Maintain carbon neutrality

Companies become carbon neutral when they remove the same amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they emit. 

Achieving carbon neutrality is not only critical for the future of our planet, but is also a differentiator for companies serious about mitigating their greenhouse gas footprint. It signals to stakeholders that climate risks are being measured and managed, and represents a first step in work towards net zero emissions, as it helps drive changing behavior within the company to reduce the cost of carbon.

Carbon neutral since 2021

In mid-2021, Indeed announced our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by the end of that year. In August 2021, we reached our carbon neutrality goal — five months ahead of our targeted public commitment date. 

But our work doesn’t end there. We aim to maintain our annual carbon neutrality certification, while committing to achieving net zero in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030.

How we first achieved carbon neutrality

In 2021, Indeed achieved the environmental milestone of CarbonNeutral® company certification through a collaboration with Climate Impact Partners, the leading experts on carbon neutrality and climate finance. Our CarbonNeutral® certification means we’ve followed The CarbonNeutral Protocol to make clear, credible, and transparent claims about our carbon neutral action. We plan to maintain this certification annually moving forward.

Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions and office closures, Indeed’s 2020 GHG emissions were significantly lower than previous years. We went above and beyond certification requirements and based our CarbonNeutral® certification on 2019 emissions data. 

To achieve carbon neutrality, Indeed supported projects that reduce carbon emissions, a practice known as carbon offsetting. While many companies only offset their direct emissions, Indeed offsets emissions across our entire value chain (i.e. scopes 1, 2, and 3), which also includes emissions from our purchased goods and services, business travel, and more. 

In 2021, we supported carbon offset projects that produced both environmental and social benefits, such as enhanced livelihoods and human health. Such projects include:

  1. Truck stop electrification
    U.S.

    Technology that enables truck drivers to be more mindful of the environment while enjoying better sleep without the noise, vibration, and exhaust fumes from idling

  2. Solar water heating
    India

    Provides households, small and medium-sized enterprises, and institutions with an in-house hot water supply fueled by renewable energy

  3. Seneca Meadows landfill gas 
    U.S.

    Award-winning project that has created almost 420 acres of new wetlands, established an environmental education center, and generates enough electricity from the landfill gas to power 18,000 homes
